How to Add Hairpins to your Bridal Hairstyle
One bridal hair accessory that I find very popular right now is small hairpin sets. Often they are small, jewel-like accessories that you can scatter over your wedding-day hairstyle which gives the impression of jewels in the hair.
Or you can pair them together all on one side. Just don't place them all in a line. Staggered is best. They are very versatile.
They are often lightweight but really do lend themselves to updos or half updos. So I definitely recommend them for brides with longer hair.
Decide where you want to place the pin in your hair. Take in to consideration which side of your hair the congregation or audience will see. Often in a wedding the bride will stand on one side and groom and the other. It would less than idea if your beautiful hairpins were gathered on the wrong side!
Pins are really easy to put in. Firstly with the decorative part of the pin facing downwards and outwards you push the pin into the hair in an upwards motion. Then you flip the decorative side upwards and push the pin downwards into the hair. This creates a kind of non-visible fold of hair that the pin can grab hold of. Therefore giving it a better grip in your hair.
Here are some extra tips when choosing a bridal hairpin set.
Choose pins that complement the dress, not compete with it
Match metals, pearls, or crystals to the gown’s embellishments for a cohesive look.
Use odd numbers for a natural effect
Styling pins in groups of three or five feels softer and more organic than perfectly symmetrical placement.
Anchor pins into structure, not softness
Secure decorative pins into braids, twists, or a teased base so they stay put all day and night.
Mix sizes for depth and interest
Combining slightly different pin sizes creates dimension and prevents the look from feeling flat or overly uniform.
Place pins where the hairstyle naturally draws the eye
Around a low bun, along a braid, or just above the ear are flattering focal points in photos.
Angle pins intentionally
Insert pins at a slight angle rather than straight in—this adds movement and makes them feel thoughtfully styled.
Balance the hairstyle with the veil
If wearing a veil, place decorative pins either above or to the side of the comb so nothing feels crowded.
Test placement during the hair trial
Try multiple arrangements to see how they photograph and hold up—small adjustments make a big difference.
Avoid over-accessorizing
Let the pins shine by keeping other hair accessories minimal, especially if the pins are ornate.
Finish with a light hold spray
A flexible hairspray helps secure the pins without dulling their shine or making the hair stiff.
