I live in downtown Essex so I go to all the shops and know what's new as soon as it happens.
Essex Village isn't the kind of place you stumble into. You come here on purpose, and once you do, you understand why people keep coming back. Tucked along the western bank of the Connecticut River in Middlesex County, Essex is one of the most walkable, most genuinely charming small-town shopping destinations in Connecticut. Main Street runs straight to the waterfront, lined entirely with independently owned shops. All carefully curated stores run by people who chose to be here.
The town has been a creative and commercial hub since the 1600s — and that heritage shows in the quality and character of what you'll find today.
The mix is what makes it worth the drive: fashion boutiques stocked with sustainable and locally sourced clothing, art galleries and artisan co-ops filled with handmade work, specialty gift shops that feel nothing like the usual souvenirs, a bridal boutique that draws brides from across the state, and a museum gift shop inside a 19th-century steamboat warehouse. This guide covers all of it, organized by category so you can plan your visit.
There's a reason why Essex, CT was voted "Best Small Town in New England', by Yankee Magazine in 2026.
Fashion & Clothing Boutiques
Essex punches well above its size when it comes to fashion. The shops here aren't stocking the same brands you'd find online, they're buying with intention, carrying lines that reflect their own aesthetic and their customers' values.
Grace & Haven
Grace & Haven is the shop that best captures what Essex retail is all about. Founded by Amy Ihrke, it's a mom-owned boutique built around the idea that shopping small should also mean shopping well. The collections span women's fashion, baby and kids clothing, and home goods, all curated with a focus on sustainable practices and locally sourced, handcrafted products. What sets it apart is the feeling you get inside: it's not a boutique trying to look like a boutique. It's a genuine neighborhood shop where the owner's taste and values are evident in every item on the rack. If you only have time for one fashion stop in Essex, make it this one.
Port + Willow
Port + Willow occupies the other end of the spectrum in the best possible way: simple, affordable, and unpretentious. The aesthetic is clean and wearable and the kind of clothes you reach for on a Saturday morning without overthinking it. It's a natural complement to Grace & Haven, and the two shops together make for a satisfying fashion loop on Main Street.
Haystacks
Haystacks is a women's clothing store with more than a decade in business, which in the world of independent retail is a meaningful track record. The brand originates from Suttons Bay, Michigan, but the Essex location has built its own loyal following. Expect classic, affordable pieces with a relaxed sensibility.
J. Alden Clothiers
J. Alden Clothiers has been on Main Street since 1993, offering both men's and women's clothing and gifts. Three decades of dressing Essex residents is a statement of its own. The focus is on the finest clothing and attentive service and it's the kind of shop where you will get quality service and quality, curated items.
Cortland Park
Cortland Park is a luxury lifestyle brand specializing in modern sophistication and timeless elegance. You'll find high-end women's clothing and cashmere beside up-scale home accents and gifts. What they say: "at Cortland Park we strive for the highest quality while providing a style that complements every woman's wardrobe."
J. McLaughlin
J. McLaughlin is packed with effortless and enduring styles for both men and women. J. McLaughlin offers clothes and accessories with a modern twist. Items are thoughtfully designed with impeccable craftsmanship, original colors and prints, and innovative fabrics. From cool to classic, chic to witty.
Talbots
Talbots A timeless New England lifestyle brand for women who love looking well put together, with a range of sizes for every body. And it's housed in the old cinema!
Homeward Collective
Homeward Collective is described as bringing "a sense of ease and natural New England beauty" to the spaces we call home. Homeward carries decor, clothing, and design pieces with a clean, organic aesthetic. It's a thoughtful shop for anyone who takes their home seriously. And the candles smell great!
The RiverLane
The RiverLane offers a modern, style-forward energy. Their tagline is, "Where every day is a style celebration" and that gives you a sense of the vibe. It's a sophisticated stop, featuring hard-to-find designers and elegant outfits for work and play.
The RiverLane Sport & Men's
The RiverLane Men & Sport In a separate boutique just a few doors down from The Riverlane is RiverLane Men & Sport. Here you will find men's fashion. Think Ralph Lauren meets Tommy Bahama. Lots of sporty options for the golf course and smart casual for dinner at the country club afterwards.
Jewelry, Art & Galleries
Essex has a deeper art culture than most visitors expect. The town has been home to working artists and craftspeople for generations, and that history is reflected in the quality of what you'll find in its galleries and artisan shops. If you appreciate handmade work like jewelry, ceramics, glass, textiles then this is where you should spend serious time.
Essex is one of the few small towns in Connecticut where you can walk from a gallery showing artists to a cooperative of local makers to a shop stocking handmade jewelry. And all within a few blocks.
De Paula Jewelers
De Paula Jewelers is a jewelry shop where you will find pieces not found anywhere else. For decades, they have worked with customers to create the jewelry pieces of their dreams. With over four decades of experience in crafting jewelry by hand, De Paula offers design, repair and estate valuation of fine jewelry.
CT River Artisans Co-op
The CT River Artisans Co-op operates on a different model: it's a collective of local makers, selling directly through a shared storefront. The selection spans wall art, jewelry, silk-screened fabrics, stained and fused glass, woodworking, knitting, quilling, pottery, and weaving. Every item was made by someone in the region, which gives the shop a specificity and authenticity that's hard to replicate. It's a strong destination for anyone looking for a gift that tells a story.
Essex Art Association
The Essex Art Association has been serving the shoreline community since 1946 — making it one of the oldest local art associations in the state. Housed in a historic Essex building, it operates as a nonprofit seasonal gallery with a commitment to showcasing all styles, from traditional to contemporary. Hours vary by season, so check ahead before visiting.
Verdigris Art Gallery
Verdigris Art Gallery is an art gallery and studio run by two artists. The gallery showcases the artists' own works and those of other artists. They also host opening receptions, drop-in drawing sessions, artist talks, discussion nights, and more.
Handmade Jewelry in Essex
For visitors specifically looking for handmade jewelry, Essex delivers. Shops like Grace & Haven, Covet Bridal and the CT River Museum Gift Shop carry artisan pieces alongside their other collections which include the floral-inspired hair accessories and jewelry made by Carson & Co, a local jewelry brand based right here in Essex.
Gifts, Home & Specialty Shops
This is the category that makes Essex a complete shopping destination rather than a one-dimensional town. Whether you're hunting for a housewarming gift, a piece of home decor, or a souvenir that actually captures the character of the town, the shops below deliver.
-
Goods & Curiosities at the Griswold Inn - The Griswold Inn is one of the most storied establishments in New England, and its shop reflects that heritage. Expect an eclectic mix of New England and maritime-inspired gifts, Early American heritage products, and Connecticut lifestyle goods. It's the best souvenir stop in town. It's the kind of place where you buy something for yourself while pretending it's a gift.
-
Emmys on Main - An eclectic mix of clothing, artisan jewelry, one-of-a-kind gifts, and Essex-specific merchandise. If you want something that says "I was in Essex," this is your stop. The locally themed pieces make it especially popular with first-time visitors.
-
Pough Interiors - Located above Nora Murphy, Pough Interiors focuses on beautiful, comfortable, and inspiring home furnishings. It skews more toward serious home design than casual browsing, but if you're in the market for a statement piece, it's worth a look.
-
Nora Murphy The Little Shop - Nora Murphy is celebrated online and in print for her country house style. Her shop in Essex is a gem and features a shop interior that feels like a home. It's a unique shopping experience that reflects the warm and inviting country house styles that are featured in her books.
-
House of the Triple Moon - Billed as "an enchanted shop honoring your path of living with intention," this one is for the crystal collectors, the spiritually curious, and anyone who appreciates a shop with genuine personality. It's unlike anything else on Main Street, which is exactly the point.
-
Harley & Marley - A shop filled with charm and variety. You'll find home décor, kids' goodies furry friends, books, gifts, and beautifully scented hand-poured candles.
-
Weekend Kitchen - An eclectic shop all about cooking and unique home finds for the kitchen. There is even a full calendar of cooking classes to sign up to.
-
Pencil & Wool - A cute mom & daughter colab featuring hand-painted cards and gifts with a full calendar of arty events like 'still life drawing', 'felting', 'rug-hooking' and more. I recently did one of their watercolor workshops. It was amazing.
The Connecticut River Museum Gift Shop
The Connecticut River Museum Gift Shop is housed in a restored 1878 steamboat warehouse at 67 Main Street, Steamboat Dock. Interestingly its the last remaining structure of its kind on the Connecticut River, and a listed property on the National Register of Historic Places. The building alone is worth the walk down to the waterfront.
Essex is where the first American submarine was built. In 1776, the Turtle, a one-person wooden submersible designed to attach explosives to British warships, was constructed here. The museum has a full-scale replica.
Inside, the museum shop carries maritime gifts, books, jewelry, and toys spanning a wide range of ages and price points. It's one of the better-curated museum shops in Connecticut: the merchandise actually connects to the history and character of the place rather than feeling like generic gift-shop filler. Handmade jewelry, including pieces from local makers, is part of the mix and makes it a natural stop for anyone who wants to bring home something with genuine local roots.
The museum itself covers more than 12,000 years of Connecticut River history, from Indigenous tribes through the industrial revolution to the rise of river recreation. If you're visiting with kids, the exhibits are engaging enough to hold their attention. If you're visiting without kids, the building and the waterfront setting are reason enough to come.
One practical note: the museum is closed on Mondays. Plan your Essex visit for Tuesday through Sunday to make sure this stop is available.
Bridal & Special Occasion: Covet Bridal
Covet Bridal is a by-appointment-only bridal boutique in Essex Village, and it draws brides from well beyond Middlesex County. The appeal is the combination of a curated, intimate experience and an accessible price point: every gown in the collection is priced under $3,000. The aesthetic leans classic with modern sensibility featuring timeless silhouettes that photograph beautifully without feeling dated five years from now. Brides can choose between Ready to Wed gowns (available to take home the same day) and Made to Order options for those who want something tailored to their specifications.
Practical note: Covet Bridal is by appointment only. Book ahead at covetbridal.com before planning your visit.
The bridal day-trip angle is worth mentioning for anyone planning a shopping excursion with a wedding party. Essex's Main Street is compact enough that a Covet appointment can anchor a full afternoon: browse Grace & Haven for bridesmaid gifts and home goods, stop into the artisan shops for handmade jewelry, and end at the waterfront. For brides looking for delicate, floral-inspired jewelry to complement their gown or handmade pieces from local makers, Carson & Co's hair accessories, pins and combs are available at Covet Bridal.
